IGBT power module targets EV traction inverters

Infineon Technologies AG has released an IGBT power module that targets electric vehicle (EV) traction inverters in the 80 kW to 100 kW power class. The HybridPACK DC6i six-pack module is optimized for system cost and performance requirements in hybrid and small battery electric vehicles. The IGBT power module leverages Infineon’s established IGBTs and compact package technologies, while providing cost-effective thermal management and an easy installation.

Within Infineon’s portfolio, the HybridPACK DC6i is positioned between the HybridPACK1 family and the more powerful HybridPACK Drive family.  The new module is housed in the same compact footprint (7.2 cm x 14 cm) as the HybridPACK1, which is 25 percent smaller than the HybridPACK Drive, but the available output power is more than 50 percent higher, said Infineon.

While the HybridPACK1 uses Infineon’s IGBT3 technology, the foundation for the HybridPACK DC6i module is the company’s latest EDT2 IGBTs. The EDT2 technology offers a blocking voltage of 750 V, a short-term extended operation temperature of 175°C, and high short-circuit ruggedness.

The HybridPACK DC6i also supplies six screw connectors to the DC-link capacitor compared to two in the HybridPACK1 family. “This enables a low-inductive design with a stray inductance of 15 nH,” said the company.The new module also leverages the company’s direct-cooling wave baseplate, which provides cost-effective heat dissipation with a thermal resistance from the IGBT chip junction to the fluid of 0.17 K/W. It’s also easy to mount with press-fit pins and additional guiding elements for gate driver board mounting in a few seconds.

The HybridPACK DC6i is fully qualified according to the AQG324 for automotive power modules. Available in production volume, the HybridPACK DC6i will be available from Infineon’s authorized distributors in September 2020.
